We back funds and founders raising the baseline of human capability.
Small, opinionated LP + occasional direct investor for weird, hard, high-upside work.
We don’t index the orchard – we just pick a few things we’d be happy to hold for a long time.
Who
Matt Smith is a serial entrepreneur who co-founded Thinkific (TSX: THNC) and Later.
After a decade building technology that helps people share knowledge and grow businesses, he now backs funds and founders working on what matters most: biotech that heals, food systems that scale, education that reaches everyone, and energy that's clean.
What we do
We write LP checks into specialist funds and, sometimes, direct checks into their standout companies. The common thread: real technology, serious people, and a shot at raising the baseline of what humans can do. The Honeycrisp name is the reminder: fewer bets, higher quality, no sprayed-on shine.
- You live and breathe a specific domain.
- You’re working on weird, hard problems with real upside.
- If it works, the floor for human capability moves up, not just a KPI.
The Honeycrisp Test
We're interested when three things are true.
- It raises the baseline – normal people can do more, not just the 0.1%.
- It scales – there's a credible path to impacting a lot of people.
- It ages well – in 20 years it still looks like a good idea for the world.
If it's yes / yes / yes, we lean in.
Not for us
We don’t invest in weapons, defense platforms, or products mainly built to hurt or manipulate people. There are other funds for that. If it’s a bad apple for the world, we’re not the right fit.
